New Process Metallurgy Module for Steel and Slag

Thermo-Calc 2019b introduces a new module which makes it easy to set up calculations for steel and slag interactions, the Process Metallurgy Module. The new module is designed for application to steel-making and steel refining processes including converters, such as basic oxygen furnaces, Electric arc furnaces, Ladle furnace metallurgy and more.

The Process Metallurgy Module is available for free to Thermo-Calc users who have the thermodynamic database TCOX9 or TCOX8 and who currently have a valid Maintenance and Support Subscription.

Publication Showing Applications of Process Metallurgy Module

The Process Metallurgy Module was just released last week and a publication showing some of its applications to steel and slag has already been published.

A Kinetic and Thermodynamic Description of the Steel Making Process using Thermo-Calc and the CALPHAD Database TCOX, was published as part of the proceedings for METEC & 3rd ESTAD 2019, European Steel Technology and Application Days: Düsseldorf, Germany.

The results of the paper were also presented at the conference last week by the paper's primary author, Dr. Nicholas Grundy of Thermo-Calc Software.

New Precipitation Growth Rate Models

The Precipitation module (TC-PRISMA) includes two new growth rate models in Thermo-Calc 2019b - paraequilibrium (PE) and non-partition local equilibrium (NPLE).

A new example, P_13, shows the new paraequilibrium growth rate model. The application for the new example is cementite precipitation at low temperatures for a steel. Users can access the new example in the Help Menu > Examples Files > Precipitation module.

New and Updated Databases

Thermo-Calc 2019b includes three new databases and two updated databases:

  • New thermodynamic copper database, TCCU3
  • New kinetic copper database, MOBCU3
  • New oxide and slag thermodynamic database, TCOX9
  • Updated steel and Fe- alloys database, TCFE9.1
  • Updated titanium database, TCTI2.1

TC-Python Training Almost Full

The first ever TC-Python training course will be held August 29-30 in Stockholm, Sweden. Only a few spots remain, so if you are interested, please contact us soon to reserve your place.

This two-day training course will introduce and teach TC-Python, our Python-based API which also allows users to openly couple Thermo-Calc calculations with other software using the easy-to-learn programming language Python. No prior experience in Python or TC-Python is required.

Email us at courses@thermocalc.com to reserve your spot.

Free Thermo-Calc Tutorial at EUROMAT

Thermo-Calc Software will be hosting a two hour tutorial at EUROMAT 2019 in Stockholm, Sweden, this September. The tutorial is free to all conference attendees and will give demonstrations on how to use Thermo-Calc, the Diffusion module (DICTRA), the Precipitation module (TC-PRISMA), the Property Model Calculator, the new Process Metallurgy Module and TC-Python.

If you have been considering purchasing a Thermo-Calc license or adding modules to an existing license, this is your chance to learn about the software in person from our experts.

The tutorial will be held from 16.00 - 18.00 (4:00PM to 6:00PM) on Sunday, September 1. More information can be found at the EUROMAT website

Thermo-Calc Training

Thermo-Calc Software provide introductory training courses for Thermo-Calc, DICTRA and TC-PRISMA in both Stockholm, Sweden, and Pittsburgh, USA, multiple times per year. Beginning this year, we will also offer a TC-Python training course

These courses provide a solid foundation for using the software tools, as well as "hands-on" experience filled with examples, insights and tips based on the years of practical experience of our instructors, which allow attendees to get up and running with the software much more quickly.

Some comments from attendees of our training courses include:

"Very good introductory course with lots of examples that make me confident in doing basic work and provided ideas for more advanced research."

"Very helpful overall. Would recommend to others."

"Overall this week of courses was well worth the time. I feel prepared to get busy with Thermo-Calc and DICTRA and TC-PRISMA. Thank you!"

Visit our website for a complete list of training courses and information on how to sign up, or email us at  info@thermocalc.com .

*All training is conducted in English.
