New Scholarship Honors Larry Kaufman
The TMS Foundation has set up a scholarship fund in honor of Dr. Larry Kaufman, the founder of CALPHAD, Inc. and the creator of the CALPHAD method.
Read about the Larry Kaufman Scholarship at our blog or learn how to apply or donate.
New Naming System for Software
Beginning with this release, all Thermo-Calc Software products will use a new naming system that corresponds to the year of the release, rather than the number of releases, so this release is 2015a, rather than 5.0.
The new naming system allows users to quickly determine how new their software is and whether they need an update. It also streamlines the naming across all Thermo-Calc Software products.
Read more about the new naming system and how to easily find your subversion number.
Historic Note - Lattice Stabilities
In the third and final installment in our series on the evolution of CALPHAD we learn about Larry Kaufman's contribution to the field, a story that is quite timely given the recent announcement of the Larry Kaufman scholarship fund. Learn how a graduate student's chance encounter with an obscure paper changed the materials world forever in this Historic Note.
Free Educational Demo Package
In an effort to promote the teaching of computational materials engineering, Thermo-Calc Software offers a free educational demo package for teachers and students.
The package comes with a limited version of the software, select databases and exercises designed for the classroom. The teacher's version of the package also includes answers to all of the exercises. The software can be downloaded for free and is good for a full year.
The limited verison of the software is different from the regular version in that only 3 components can be selected, whereas the full version can handle systems of up to 40 components.
We welcome teachers and students to download the educational demo packages:
